Football fans looking for a new Super Bowl matchup will have to wait for another year, as the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs have advanced to the Big Game once again. The line opened with the 49ers listed as a 2.5-point favorite, but that quickly dropped to -1 at many places before settling at -2 at bet365 and other sportsbooks.
While the 49ers may have the edge at many position groups based on regular-season performance, the Chiefs have shown they are a different offense with the emergence of rookie receiver Rashee Rice and a defense that is playing its best football at the right time. However, the Chiefs have a game-changer in quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who leads all quarterbacks in ESPN’s Total QBR at 90.2 this postseason.
The Super Bowl seems to bring out the best in Mahomes, who is going for his third Super Bowl MVP and is a favorite to do so at +125. Quarterback Brock Purdy has also been impressive, but will have a tough matchup against arguably the best quarterback the game has seen.
In terms of the run game, the Chiefs aren’t as strong as the 49ers, but they will look to continue a solid run game behind a good offensive line. Running back Christian McCaffrey, who sustained a shoulder injury in the last game, is the focal point of one of the best offenses in the NFL.
In the receiving game, the Mahomes-Kelce connection has been strong, but the Chiefs have been plagued with dropped passes and mistakes by their receivers. Purdy, on the other hand, has an advantage with various weapons in the passing game, including Deebo Samuel and tight end George Kittle.
Both teams have strong offensive lines, with the Chiefs grading out slightly better, but the loss of left guard Joe Thuney could impact their performance. The front seven for both teams also boasts standout players, with Nick Bosa for the 49ers and Chris Jones for the Chiefs.
In the secondary, the Chiefs have an edge with L’Jarius Sneed and Charvarius Ward, but both units are strong.
If the game is close, the Chiefs have the edge in special teams. Overall, the matchup between the 49ers and Chiefs is set to be an exciting and competitive Super Bowl.
